History & Background
Garth and Karen De Bruin have more than 30 years combined experience in the pet industry, originally beginning their passion in the industry by showing, breeding and training Samoyeds, Newfoundlands, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Although initially their participation in the pet industry was only a hobby, their passion eventually drove them to set out to create a Resort Style Pet Care Facility for pet owners, doing so on their 40 acre home property in the Samford Valley.
As a result of this idea, they built Samford Boarding Kennels and Cattery, and for many years built up a major client list with a growing reputation as the best Pet Care Facility around. Later in the year 2000, they changed the name to Samford Pet Resort, after building one of the first Deluxe range of Pet Accommodation of its kind in Australia, offering an ever wider range of accommodations and services to clients. Samford Pet Resort went on to win many awards, including the Quest Business Achiever Awards 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012, and becoming a Gold Winner of the Quest Hall of Fame. They have also gone on to win the Life PIA (Pet Industry Association) Best Boarding Service Australia 2007, 2008, and 2009.
In 2009, Garth and Karen went ahead and purchased the Redcliffe Boarding Kennels, now known as Northshore Pet Resort, with the vision of creating a sister company to Samford Pet Resort. Northshore Pet Resort is conveniently located on the Redcliffe Peninsula (see map), Rothwell, spread over two picturesque acres, and since 2009 has gone on to follow in the footsteps of Samford Pet Resort in providing the highest quality of accommodation and services available in Pet Care.
Northshore Pet Resort was quickly recognised on it’s own merits, and also went on to win the Quest Business Achievers Awards 2010, 2011 and 2012. More recently, Northshore Pet Resort was nominated as a finalist in the Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards 2018 for Customer Service Excellence. In 2019 Northshore Pet Resort became one of the Top 5 Regional Finalists for the Small Business of the Year Award, run through the QLD Training Awards, which celebrate organisations that strive for best practice and innovation in education and training.
The love of pet care has followed on through Garth and Karen to their two children, who grew up on the Samford property learning as they went about the importance of high quality pet care and services.
As a result, Samford Pet Resort is now run and managed by their son, Blake De Bruin, and the Northshore Pet Resort is run and managed by their daughter and son-in-law Kylie and Colin Mackay, both overseen by Garth and Karen De Bruin. Colin Mackay also has an extensive background working with animals, as he has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, and has worked in the largest beef cattle feedlot in the country, whilst beginning his work in the De Bruin family business in 2003.
These businesses are family owned and operated, and are continually improving standards of accommodation and services to meet the growing needs of clients. The De Bruin and Mackay families, both with proven extensive experience in the industry, strive to provide a safe and caring environment for the Pets entrusted to their care.
